Black Olive Trees: Trim or Remove?

Arborist pruning a large shade tree

Black olive trees are one of the most common shade trees in Broward. They're tough, fast-growing and give great shade. They also stain cars and pool decks, drop leaves constantly, and grow big enough to crowd a house. So should you trim yours or take it out?

The Problems With Black Olives

  • Staining: The small fruit and sap leave dark stains on driveways, cars, pool decks and patios.
  • Size: Black olives get large and wide, often outgrowing small yards.
  • Roots: Their roots can lift sidewalks and driveways.
  • Thorns: Some varieties have spiny branches, which makes DIY trimming unpleasant.
  • Dense canopy: Thick growth catches wind in storms if it isn't thinned.

When Trimming Is Enough

If the tree is healthy and well placed, a good trim usually solves most complaints:

  • Thinning lets light and wind through, reduces storm risk and cuts down on debris
  • Roof and structure clearance keeps branches off the house and pool cage
  • Canopy raising lifts low limbs over the driveway and lawn

Most black olives do well with a trim every 1–2 years. See tree trimming.

When Removal Makes More Sense

  • Roots are damaging your driveway, sidewalk, pipes or foundation
  • The tree is dead, declining or storm-damaged
  • It's planted too close to the house to ever be safe
  • The staining and cleanup simply aren't worth it to you anymore

In tight yards, black olives are removed in sections and lowered by rope so nothing gets damaged. See tree removal.

Check Before You Remove

Some Broward cities and HOAs have rules about removing trees. Check with your city and association before taking down a large tree.
